Disney fans and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson fans alike have reason to rejoice as it was announced at Disney’s annual shareholder meeting that the 2016 hit film “Moana” will be getting a live-action remake, and Johnson will be reprising his role as Maui.
In a special pre-recorded video message, Johnson shared the exciting news, filmed in Hawaii with his two youngest daughters by his side. He expressed his deep connection to the Pacific Islands and how it inspired the “very special story” of “Moana.”
“We are so happy and excited to announce that a live-action reimagining of ‘Moana’ is in the works,” Johnson announced, much to the delight of fans.
He assured fans that the new film will include all the beloved characters and elements from the original, including Moana, Gramma Tala, the music, the dance, Te Fiti, Pua the pig, the village, and the powerful ocean. He even teased that Moana’s chicken, Heihei, will also be making an appearance.
But the biggest reveal was that Johnson will be returning as Maui, a character that was inspired by his late grandfather, “the legendary High Chief, Peter Maivia.” Johnson shared that bringing Maui to life in the live-action remake is a way for him to honor his grandfather and his Polynesian heritage.
In an Instagram post, Johnson expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to tell the story of Moana on the big screen and to showcase the music and dance that are at the core of Polynesian culture. He ended his post with a nod to Maui’s iconic line from the film, saying, “What can I saaaaaay except… You’re welcome.”
