Elderly Man Arrested in Deadly Shooting Outside Westchester Grocery Store

An 83-year-old man has been arrested for murder after a shooting occurred in the parking lot of an Amazon Fresh grocery store in Westchester.

The incident took place in the parking lot of the grocery store on La Cienega Boulevard on Tuesday evening. According to witnesses, the elderly man, identified as Richard Strickland, attempted to intervene in an altercation between a man and a woman. However, the situation escalated into an argument, leading Strickland to pull out a gun and fire shots.

Eyewitnesses reported that Strickland initially displayed the gun as a warning but ended up shooting the other man, identified as 31-year-old YanCarlos Santiago. The shooting victim was later pronounced dead by the coroner.

Community members and witnesses mentioned that Strickland, a resident of Los Angeles, is a decorated Korean War veteran. They stated that he came out of his apartment wearing a bathrobe and slippers to intervene in the fight and protect the woman involved.

The Los Angeles Police Department arrested Strickland at the scene and subsequently booked him for murder. The incident has sparked discussions about self-defense and the use of firearms in public altercations.
