Major Retailers Close Downtown San Francisco Stores Due to Changing Dynamics and Safety Concerns

Nordstrom, Anthropologie, and Saks OFF 5TH are among the retailers closing their stores in downtown San Francisco due to changing dynamics and safety concerns. The closures have prompted calls for the city to rethink its development plans.

Nordstrom has announced the closure of two of its downtown San Francisco stores, citing dramatic changes in the area’s dynamics and the impact on customer foot traffic.

The Westfield Centre flagship store and the Market Street Rack will shut for good this summer. Anthropologie’s Market Street location will close on May 13 and Saks OFF 5TH no later than this fall.

Nordstrom said it will focus on 16 other Bay Area Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack locations. The closure of the retailers has prompted calls for the city to re-imagine downtown San Francisco, with some citing safety and quality of life issues.
