Assembly Member Miguel Santiago and District Attorney George Gascón announced proposed legislation to protect undocumented immigrants from repercussions for reporting certain crimes.

Assembly Member Miguel Santiago and Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced proposed legislation called the Immigrant Rights Act that would protect undocumented immigrants from being deported when reporting certain crimes.

The bill would encourage more immigrants to come forward and report crimes by providing protection from deportation for nearly 30 different types of crime, including rape, murder, and domestic violence.

The bill also aims to prohibit law enforcement from denying witness classifications based on their immigration, criminal history, or potential gang affiliation.
