The Health Benefits of Coffee: From Lowering Disease Risk to Improving Mood

Coffee can offer numerous health benefits, from reducing the risk of diseases like Parkinson's and type 2 diabetes to improving mood and reducing the risk of suicide. While excessive caffeine intake can lead to negative effects like insomnia, studies show that moderate coffee consumption can have positive effects on health. Experts recommend drinking water before coffee, enjoying coffee without added sweeteners, and even drinking coffee before a nap to boost energy upon waking. Adding dairy or non-dairy milk can also increase nutritional value.

Caffeine has both positive and negative effects on the human body. While excessive caffeine consumption can lead to insomnia, caffeine also offers several health benefits. Research shows that caffeine can reduce the risk of diseases that can be caused by alcohol.

Studies comparing coffee to tea have shown that coffee drinkers have a lower risk of cirrhosis of the liver. Caffeine also reduces the risk of developing diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and type 2 diabetes.

Research also shows that daily coffee consumption can reduce the risk of suicide by 50%. According to a study by the Harvard School of Public Health, people who drink 2-4 cups of coffee a day are less likely to commit suicide than those who do not.

While caffeine cannot have as strong an effect as medicine, it can play a role in treating depression. Caffeine stimulates the production of brain neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine, which can help alleviate depression.

Experts say that even those who do not suffer from depression can improve their mood by drinking coffee in the morning. At a time when alcohol and tobacco have been proven to be harmful to health, coffee remains one of the few indulgences that can be enjoyed without worry. Time magazine has compiled tips for enjoying coffee in a healthier way.

  • Start with water

Caffeine has a diuretic effect, but there is no need to worry about dehydration if consumed regularly. However, people who start their day with coffee tend not to drink enough water. It is advisable to drink a glass of water before brewing coffee.

  • Enjoy coffee without sugar

Artificial sweeteners have no calories, but they increase the risk of obesity, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. Try to enjoy the taste of coffee without sweetness. If that’s not possible, it’s better to use a teaspoon of real sugar instead of artificial sweeteners.

  • Drink coffee before taking a nap

We think of coffee as a “pick-me-up,” but its effects typically don’t kick in until about 30 minutes after consumption. If you drink coffee and then take a 30-minute nap, you can wake up with a lot of energy. However, do not attempt this after sunset, as it can interfere with sleep.

  • Add dairy

Add milk or cream to coffee for added nutrition. You can even use almond or coconut milk.
