Top Idol BTS in Seoul Subway Advertisement…2nd EXO

BTS accounts for more than 10% of all advertising boy idol rather than girl idol The growth of subway ads…Over 2,000.

Last year, the biggest number of subway advertisements recorded was male idol group BTS, with a total of 227. EXO followed with 165 cases.

The Seoul Metropolitan Subway said on the 7th that the number of advertisements for idol and famous people posted on the Seoul subway in 2019 totaled 2,166, of which BTS accounted for 10.5 percent of the total with 227.

Following BTS, EXO ranked second overall with 165 cases, followed by Wanna One with 159, NCT with 127, NU’EST with 44 and Seventeen with 41 cases.

By individual member, BTS Jungkook topped the list with 46 cases, while EXO’s Baekhyun came in second with 35 cases. Another member of BTS, V, also posted 31 advertisements.

Among female idol groups, IZ*ONE topped the list with 40 cases, followed by TWICE and Black Pink with 22. Overall, however, advertisements by male idol groups accounted for a larger portion than those of female idol groups.

Among idol groups that have been active in the past, Super Junior had the largest number of cases with 40, followed by ▲H.O.T. with 22 cases, ▲Tiara with seven cases, ▲Tiara with six cases, ▲Sechs Kies with four cases, and ▲Baby Vox with one case.

Ads by professional gamer “Faker” and Japanese trainees and musical and theater actors other than idol groups were also posted. There were also cases in which ordinary people celebrated their own birthdays or high school juniors celebrated their seniors’ birthdays.

Subway advertisements were only 76 in 2014, but they have been growing explosively, surpassing 1,000 for the first time in 2017. It surpassed 2,000 for the first time in 2018, with 2,166 subway advertisements posted last year.

The most popular subway advertisements are Samsung Station, Gangnam Station, Hongdae Station, and Hapjeong Station. In particular, Hapjeong Station is not only in the spotlight as a new business district, but also enjoys great popularity as it is packed with various entertainment agencies.

In addition, Apgujeong Station on Line 3 and Myeong-dong Station on Line 4 are also popular.

The amount of subway advertisements varies depending on various conditions such as the location, size, and type of advertisements, but on average, the largest number of advertisements in history (based on Samsung Station on Line 2) is up to 4.5 million won per month.

After the advertiser requests the advertisement agency to publish the advertisement application, the agency requests the Seoul Metro to review the advertisement design in consultation with the advertiser. The corporation will hold its own advertising review committee to determine the suitability of the advertisement and post it on the subway if there is no problem.

It takes about a week from application for advertisement to publication. However, it may take one to two months to go through an external advertising review committee due to problems with advertising.

“The advertisement of the Seoul subway, which is used by 7.5 million people a day, is an attractive promotional tool with very high exposure,” said Kim Jung-hwan, head of the space business department at the Seoul Metro. “We will make more efforts to catch two rabbits: generating profits and providing various promotional means.”
