New PursuitAlert app warns drivers of high-speed police chases

Digital Siren's PursuitAlert app sends real-time alerts to drivers about high-speed police chases nearby, potentially saving lives and preventing accidents. Developed by a retired law enforcement officer, the app works similarly to an Amber Alert and has already been adopted by law enforcement agencies in Atlanta and Detroit. Despite the success, no California law enforcement agency has signed up yet. The app could be a game-changer in a state where CHP reported 2,478 pursuits resulting in crashes in 2020, with 353 involving innocent bystanders.

Retired law enforcement officer Tim Morgan has developed the ‘PursuitAlert’ app, which alerts drivers of high-speed police chases in their area. The app sends an alert signal to users’ phones up to three-quarters of a mile ahead of the pursuit, similar to an Amber Alert.

In California, where the app could be particularly useful, there were 2,478 police pursuits resulting in crashes in 2020, with 353 involving innocent bystanders.

Despite being in use in Atlanta and Detroit, no law enforcement agency in California has yet signed up to use PursuitAlert, although federal grants are available for this technology.
