Apple has acquired WaveOne, a US startup that develops video compression artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, according to IT media TechCrunch.
Although Apple has not confirmed the acquisition, WaveOne’s website was closed in January and several employees, including one co-founder, are currently working in Apple’s machine learning group.
WaveOne’s AI-based “content-aware” video compression and decompression algorithms can be executed on AI accelerators embedded in PCs and smartphones, and it uses object detection to reduce bandwidth without sacrificing quality.
