Korea’s Small Modular Reactor (SMR) named SMART, which received its standard design certification in 2012, has secured a foothold in overseas markets.
The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute has signed an online agreement with the government of Alberta, Canada, to cooperate in using SMRs, including SMART, for carbon reduction in the region’s oil sands mining area.
The two sides plan to share information in advance for SMART’s feasibility confirmation and licensing acquisition. Korea’s Hyundai Engineering and other companies have already been pursuing projects to use SMART in the Alberta oil sands mining area. The cooperation agreement is expected to further promote such activities.
