Tesla, the world’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer, is accelerating its operations at the Texas-based Gigafactory in Austin. The latest report reveals that Tesla invested a massive $5.81 billion in the 2,500-acre (1,012-hectare) site by the end of 2022.
The company relocated its headquarters from Palo Alto, California to Austin, Texas, in 2021 to create a major technology hub. The report submitted by the company to Travis County shows that the number of workers at the site increased to 12,277 by the end of 2022, a 3.5 times increase from the previous year.
The report also revealed that Tesla hired both regular and non-regular workers, with the total number of employees increasing from 3,523 in 2021. Regular employees at the factory received a minimum salary of $47,147 in 2022.
The Texas Gigafactory produces the Model Y SUV, and the company plans to start producing its electric pickup truck, the Cybertruck, at the same location. Tesla’s plan also includes the construction of a cathode factory in Austin and a lithium refinery in Corpus Christi, Texas, to support battery production.
