Liang, a remarkable Chinese man, has captivated the nation’s attention with his unwavering determination to pursue higher education. Year after year, he stands at the crossroads of possibility and resilience, facing the gaokao exam, the gateway to prestigious universities, with a resolve that knows no bounds.
Liang, now in his 50s, has become a legendary figure, earning the moniker of the “King of Gaokao.” Each year, as the college admission season rolls around, he becomes the focus of media spotlight, his story inspiring countless individuals to believe in the power of dreams. And this year, for the 27th time, Liang embarked on his quest once again, taking the gaokao in the vibrant city of Chengdu, Sichuan Province.
As the first day of the gaokao drew to a close, Liang emerged from the examination center, a mixture of emotions etched across his face. In an exclusive interview with our publication, he candidly shared his thoughts, saying, “The language section went well, but I faced challenges with the math exam. Nonetheless, I remain hopeful.”
Hope fuels Liang’s aspirations as he sets his sights on the coveted score of 560 or above, the ticket to enter a world-class university. This year holds special significance for him, as he confided, “I yearn for my desired score to manifest, making this gaokao my final endeavor.”
Liang’s journey to this pivotal moment has been arduous, spanning over three decades. It began in 1983 when he first attempted the gaokao, only to experience repeated disappointment. Yet, he refused to be disheartened, taking a break before resuming his pursuit in 1987. For five consecutive years, he grappled with the exam but fell short of the desired results.
The constraints of the age limit, which barred candidates above 25 years old from taking the exam, forced Liang to temporarily relinquish his dreams. He ventured into various paths, working as a farmer and eventually transitioning to the construction materials industry. However, fate took a turn when the age limit was lifted in 2002, reigniting Liang’s fervor to chase his educational aspirations.
Despite numerous setbacks, Liang’s spirit remains unbroken. Over the years, he attempted the gaokao 26 times, yet the doors of top-tier universities eluded him. His highest score to date, achieved in 2018, reached a commendable 469.
Yet, as whispers of skepticism surround his relentless pursuit, Liang’s unwavering determination stands strong. He addresses the doubts by revealing the profound motivation behind his actions, stating, “Both of my parents were teachers, and it became their lifelong regret that none of their five children could attend college. In honor of their wishes, I took up this challenge, aiming to fulfill their dreams through my endeavors.”
In the face of adversity, Liang remains resolute, disregarding the judgments of others. “Regardless of what others say,” he declares, “I will forge ahead, steadfast in my pursuit of knowledge and the meaningful impact it can bring.”
