Lost Tape Project unveiled the music of the newly created “27-year-old club” musicians using AI software. The 27-year-old club refers to celebrities who died at the age of 27. Representative examples include Jimi Hendrix, Kirt Cobain, Amy Winehouse, and Jim Morrison. The music released by the Lost Tape Project is also music from Nirvana, Amy Winehouse, The Doors, and Jimi Hendrix.
AI produced the riffs and melodies of each song based on the analysis of 30 songs by the artist by Google’s AI program Magenta, and AI wrote the lyrics through artificial neural networks, a deep learning technology. Regarding the process, project participant Sean O’Connor said, “I divided each artist’s songs into hooks, solos, vocal melodies, rhythm guitars, etc., and completed them one at a time. Ninety percent of the riffs completed by AI are terrible, but I found some of them that tracks could use. Many people say that someday AI will replace musicians, but at this point, the number of humans needed to make an audible sound level matters.”
