The Weeknd donated $1 million for the civil war in Ethiopia.
According to a local research team at Belgian Ghent University, 1,900 civilians were slaughtered 150 times in Tigray by government troops, rebels, and militias after a battle between the government and rebels in November last year. Among the killed civilians included young infants and older people in their 90s.
The research team at Ghent University conducted a local investigation after the Tigray dispute broke out and submitted a report containing these results after mutual verification of the slaughtered residents’ families, friends, and media reports. The conflict has resulted in 2 million refugees so far, and more than 4 million people are receiving emergency aid.
Both of The Weeknd’s parents moved from Ethiopia to Canada, and The Weeknd grew up speaking Amharic, the official language of Ethiopia. The Weeknd shared the donation news on Instagram on Sunday morning, saying it was heartbreaking about the incident and wishing others to donate with him.
