The Bezymianny volcano, located on the Kamchatka Peninsula in far eastern Russia, erupted on April 8, spewing volcanic ash over 10km into the air. As a result, a red aviation warning was issued, prohibiting flights in the area due to the risk of engine failure from volcanic ash ingestion.
Bezymianny is one of the world’s most active volcanoes and is located approximately 350km away from the Kamchatka capital, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
The Kamchatka region, which is home to around 30 active volcanoes, is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is constantly changing due to volcanic activity. No casualties or injuries have been reported by Russian disaster authorities.
