It was an unexpected tragedy in the shisha bars in western Germany. Chancellor Angela Merkel said that the attacker did it from racism.
Although federal prosecutors treat it as a case of terrorism.
Five of the dead people were of Turkish citizens. The suspect is believed to have killed himself.
The body of the 43-year-old attacker was found together with his mother’s body. Local media have identified him as Tobias R, a German.
A tabloid reported that the suspect had firearms license, there were some ammunition and gun magazines found inside the car.
As for the authorities, they are still investigating a video that said to is of the suspect, he posted in his social media before the night of the attack.
He made himself some ring-wing conspiracy theories. Although according to the media, he has a letter of confession that he left. Such attacks seem to concern more, the far-right violence in the country.
Merkel spoke in Berlin and said, “Racism is a poison. Hate is a poison, and this poison exists in our society and is already to blame for many crimes.” She added, there are many indications at the moment that the perpetrator acted on right-wing extremist, racist motives, out of hatred towards people of other origins, religion or appearance.”
The said tragedy took place on Wednesday evening, at 10:00. The first target was a shisha bars, Midnight, in Hanau’s city centre. Some witnesses said they heard a lot of gunshots.
After that, the suspect walked his way into his car and went to another neighbourhood, Kesselstadt. It is about 1.5 miles away from the first bar and started shooting at the Arena Bar & Café.
A shisha bar is a place where people meet for smoking a pipe which is known as shisha or hookah. This is very common in the Middle East countries and Asian countries, as well as some other parts of the world.
The president of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, exclaimed that he expects the German authorities to make necessary efforts to throw light on all aspects as per the attack.
On that night, there was a search for several hours. Helicopters, officers, and a lot more were looking for the attacker.
They were able to identify the suspect through witnesses and surveillance cameras. On Thursday early morning, they stormed to the house of the suspect, just near the bar, and found him and his mother died.
Hanau is a small city of 100,000 residents. It is located about 25 km east of Frankfurt. Germany’s gun laws are one of the strictest ones and even got tighter after some mass shootings in the country.
According to Hanau Mayor Claus Kaminsky, it was the hardest day in history. Hanau has been peaceful and coexisting between different faiths and cultures.
Katja Leikert, a representative of Hanau in the parliament, said “Hopefully the injured recover swiftly. It is a horrific scenario for us all.”
Hesse state leader Volker Bouffier promised, “We will do everything to show that people don’t have to be afraid and show them that they belong with us.”
