Guess who won the right to adapt the award-winning movie “Parasite”? HBO!
It will be adapted into mini-series, which will be directed by Bong Joon Ho.
It will be a collaboration with the Succession’s executive producer and director Adam McKay, according to Deadline. Parasite is a famous South Korean television film.
This is the 6th international film that has garnered the best picture Oscar nomination announced on Monday. It is the 11th foreign language film to be nominated in the 92 years of Oscars.
This film also got six other nominations in total – Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best International Film, Best Film Editing, and Best Production Design.
It was a fierce bidding war between the giants, HBO, and Netflix.
Movies of Bong Joon Ho movies end where it all started.
One of his films, Memories of Murder, has a detective returning to the ditch where the serial killings all began. He has this great cinematography of letting people feel the emotions. The Mother dancing like grass, the litter girl who is back in the countryside. It all looks normal, but there is something different.
Everyone has witnessed different horrors, and yet the world needs to go around. As always, Jonn Ho knows how to keep his audience moving.
Parasite is his latest direction, and it received an award from Cannes. He calls this his stairway movie. Why? Because it is an upstairs-downstairs film that involves class aspirationalism.
The film starts at the half-basement apartment of a family, and its windows are just enough for someone to peep through from the ground. Korean spaces like half basements are common in Seoul.
While this family wants to believe they are above the ground, theirs is a purgatory that meets between the living people and their psychological states.
The family gets busy with their own lives. Then it starts, a Parasite drops down and morphs itself into something unexpected.
Joon Ho mentioned his plans about the series, “When I think of a limited series, I think of it as an expanded film.
Like Ingmar Bergman’s Fanny and Alexander, you have a three-hour theatrical version and a three-hour TV version. So my goal is to create a high quality an expanded version of Parasite”.
He added “Adam McKay and HBO did very well with Succession, to work with these artists who have created great works I would like to actualize this attempt to expand this film and explore all the ideas that I’ve had from the scriptwriting stage from what could happen in between the scenes through the TV series.
From these, people should be excited to see what’s coming. There will be exciting things that this series will be a success. What we don’t know yet is if it would be a total remake of the movie for television, or will there be some twists for the project.
The coming months will be intriguing as they would be able to give out some of their detailed plans like where will the set take place, in an English speaking country or South Korea?
