Selena: The Series is about how Selena Quintanilla’s life was before she became the famous Tejano singer.
The series from Netflix will be aired in summer.
It will start when she was a young girl who was living in Texas.
The nine-year-old Selena is starred by Madison Taylor Baez, who is also a rising star and has herself become a young Queen of Tejano.
She is a performing artist and singer herself, and just like the real Selena, she is very close with her father.
The parents of Baez are both bilingual, but Madison didn’t know how to speak in Spanish.
As for the show, “I actually had to learn Spanish and how to sing in Spanish. I actually sang four Spanish songs. And I had to learn all the pronunciations. And it actually turned out to be something I really loved.”
The father of Baez said that Selena’s parents were both Spanish speakers, but their daughter Selena had to learn it to.
“So, what was really interesting is that Selena didn’t actually learn to speak Spanish until her dad asked her to start singing in Spanish.”
He compared her daughter to Selena, “And when she was nine, kind of like Madison is when she had to learn to speak and sing in Spanish.”
He recalled, “So when Selena’s father came to her and said, ‘Hey I want to you to learn to sing in Spanish,’ Selena was like, ‘What? We don’t even speak Spanish! I like rock and roll!’”
Baez was simply a natural when it comes to singing and mirroring someone as if she had decades of training. The late singer and Baez have a lot in common, and her dad exclaimed that for him, it was like magic.
He said, “Madison has already been on the road, and she’s already performed concerts. So, her life is so parallel to the way young Selena started that when we both were on set, a lot of the scenes Madison was doing, we had already done them in real life. It was so surreal.”
He said that some scenes were very similar to Madison and Selena’s, “I’ll give you a quick scene without giving away too much,” and he continued, “There was a scene with Abraham [Selena’s father] and Selena/Madison was outside singing. And Abraham was in the house, ‘Like where’s that singing coming from?’ When he came out, he looked around the corner and peeked around, and it was a young Selena, who was played by Madison, of course, singing. And the look on his face was this moment like, ‘Oh my God.’ He was just blown away with her talent because she was so young. I had that very same moment when Madison was five years old. Thus, a lot of the moments we were reliving. We would come back to our hotel, and I’d tell Madison, ‘That was kind of weird, huh?’”
Fans simply can’t wait for Netflix’s Selena: The Series with Christian Serratos and Madison Baez as the young Selena on air.
